Preparing for Decoration Day 2019

Mount Muncie Cemetery committee members are out today at the cemetery getting ready for decoration day. They raised the

flag and placed flags on veterans tombstones.The crew was Elder William Thompson, Alice Elmore, and Arron Haynes.

The Mount Muncie Cemetery was founded in 1900 by a group of African-American men. There was a need for organizing a cemetery for black people to have a final resting place. The cemetery is located south on Shelby Road in Higginsville, MO.  

The members of the Mount Muncie Cemetery Association look forward to welcoming and assisting visitors at the cemetery over the Memorial Day holiday, also known as “Decoration Day.” Those dates include Thursday, May 23 through Monday, May 27, 2019.

The Mount Muncie Cemetery Association members are as follows: Elder William Thompson, chairperson, Fred Smith, vice chairperson, Alice Elmore, secretary, Arron Haynes, Joyce Haynes, Linda G. Smith (treasurers), Ralph Collins, Reverend Wilbur L. Conway, Earl Elmore, and Reverend Glenn Elmore.

MOUNT MUNCIE ON DECORATION DAY

Nestled high upon a hill

Lies Mount Muncie standing still

Sacred place, a special place

For loved ones who’ve gone in.

Some are nameless

Some are not

In someone’s heart

Who has not forgot.

So many graves

Sprouting with flowers on

This Decoration Day.

Black church men leading out

We thank you without a doubt

Somebody’s mama and somebody’s daddy

Are buried there.

As I look towards potters’ field

No markers just few flowers there

These folks died alone

Some far away from home

No family there to show how they cared

About them so

But the folks at Mount Muncie

Stood for them, cared and buried them.

DECORATION DAY, MAY 28,2012

Here a just a few of the people who are buried in the cemetery.  Family members come to the cemetery and  honor to their loved one by decorating the graves of their loved ones.

Joseph Johnson was one of the three Union soldiers buried at the cemetery.  He was  a member of the 13th Regiment Heavy Artillery.

Marie E. Johnson Flage has an unusal headstone.  It has a crest with "Royal Circle of Friends of the World" on it.http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=5861      This group was an African American fraternal organization.  It supplied insurance and was didcated to the "moral, physical, social, and economic welfare of its members."

John Henry Smith was the first sexton of the Mount Muncie Cemetery.



This is the tallest tombstone in the cemetery.

Everett Richard "Joshua" Johnson played the piano and was known as "King Of Boogie Woogie in 1940."



Hubbard Smith was one of the last person in the Smith family to be a sexton with the cemetery.

Gilbert Johnson attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO and was known for his athletic abilites in track and field events.

Wiillam "Dugan" Pollard is featured in the mural located in the City Hall building in Higginsville, MO.

Hattie Blythe is one of the 54 other persons who was born prior to the end of slavery.

Isabell Greenwood was the sister of Evervett Johnson, musician.

Harry and Minnie Harrington have an unusal tombstone. 



George Conway.  He died at General Hospital #2 , Kansas City MO.  This was the hospital that blacks could be admitted for treatment.  It is now called Truman West Hospital.



Arthur Groves was a member of the Mount Muncie Cemetery board of trustess.
